I'm not an old movie buff, I'm only 19 but I've always been a huge Lee Marvin and Strother Martin fan. It's all slight and silly. Now if someone would just talk about the movie, other than repetitive spoilers. Marvin can't believe this apostasy, and Culp is obviously annoyed by Marvin's confronting him on such an important matter. Seldom has political principle gone to such a length. Colorful cinematography by the Mexican Alex Phillips and lively , jolly musical score by John Cameron , full of mirth and amusement. After being thwarted in this attempt, they, and a would-be whore named Thursday, hatch a plan to kidnap Colby's wife, Nancy Sue, who is coincidently Sam's old flame, but find that Nancy Sue is not the sweet girl that Sam remembers.
There is a lot of language and some nudity as well as situational scenes that might be inappropriate for some viewers, but for a rollicking good adult western spoof, this fits the bill. Directed economically by workmanlike veteran Don Taylor, The Great Scout And Cathouse Thursday is amusing fun. Along in all of this is Lenz who is left over from a raid on a bordello she works at when Oliver Reed decides to keep her after he rescues the others. It is developed up and down with not much plot , some grotesque moments and in other side contains bemusing and funny scenes. Reed was superb, stole the show. What they really want is for their nemesis, Jack Colby Robert Culp is to pay them the money he's owed them for a long time.
Seems Joe has venereal disease, and plans to spread it all over the west. Seemingly endless list of character players includes a good support cast as Elizabeth Ashley as an adulterous wife , Strother Martin as an inept botcher old man whose double-crosses habitually misfire , Kay Lenz as a wanna-be young whore and Sylvia Miles as a stubborn Madame. The plot is quite serviceable and coherent, pacing good, photography gorgeous, action sequences brisk by the standards of the time. Plenty of dull jokes and childish slapstick doom this supposed comedy from the start. Cool Strother Martin plays Billy, one of his patented prairie trash characters. Instead they end up saddle-bagged with a bevy of Wild West prostitutes all named for the days of the week, one almost-virtuous young lady named Thursday, and an acid-tongued ex-sweetheart Ashley. Recommendation engine sorted out humorous, realistic, semi serious and exciting films with plots about rivalry, crimes, partners, vengeance, dishonesty, chases and races and disorder mostly in Comedy, Western and Romance genres.
Believe it or not, it is actually funny. And this itself becomes a problem because she is the favorite of a lesbian madame Sylvia Miles , who commands her own gang and owns the only motorcar around. It takes place in 1908 Colorado during the Presidential campaign of Howard Taft. Oliver Reed is the best as Joe, sporting his crazy antics. Lenz is at her most fetching and can light up the screen and steal scenes, even from such veteran actors. It's just too funny when he's misled about the cure for the clap.
Great cast with funny, funny script. One problem: Culp has used the money to join high society, and getting to him will be tougher than his former. When they finally confront each other in a fight, Culp says he is not only going to beat up Marvin for trying to get his money back, but he's going to force him to vote for the better man for President. We waited for the price to drop a little and did not hestitate to buy it. This is a fun movie. Marvin, now an old saddle bum, recalls how Ashley and he were once quite hot for each other. The movie deserves much higher than its mediocre rating.
This eccentric funny Western set in Colorado of 1908 deals with Sam Longwood Lee Marvin , a scout who has liven better days , passing through aware his former gold-mine colleague named Jack Colby Robert Culp , now is a politically ambitious magnate , who ran off with all the gold from a mine they were prospecting several years earlier. I remember laughing to the point of tears. Cool Lee Marvin plays the Great Scout. Returning to civilian life , Taylor resumed his work in pictures with a top role in the trend-setting crime drama ¨The naked city 1948 ¨ and played successful films as ¨Destination Gobi¨ , ¨Battleground¨ and ¨Stalag 17¨. It still works in this film and provides a fitting climax. Truly, this is one of the funniest movies I've seen.
Rating : Good , 6,5. Amiable but sometimes lumbering Western satire goes on and on about the same premise. None the less, They use to have good writers and actors back in the day. I'm pretty sure this is inaccurate. Lee Marvin is at his best playing reprobates and ne'r do wells as he does in this movie. Shabby-looking enterprise with cheap sets and over-lit interiors does get a small boost from Lee Marvin as a cowboy con-artist.
Reed is funny but can't convince in a long straight wig as a half-breed indian. This movie represents one of my earliest childhood memories of going to the theater to see a movie on the big screen which obviously was the only way you could see movies in those days! Lee Marvin and Strother Martin make a good comedy team. Here it is sent up - with a heavenly nuttiness. None of Don Taylor's later movies have topped this one for sheer belly laughters. I would love to see this movie again and find out if it has stood the test of time and memory. Sam Longwood, a frontiersman who has seen better days, spies the gold-mine partner, Jack Colby, who ran off with all the gold from a mine they were prospecting fifteen years earlier.
Kay Lenz is endearing as a prostitute in love with Marvin, who's in his usual ornery mode. I was 11 when I saw this in the theater. Anyone who likes something a little different and somewhat crazy will really enjoy this movie. This movie gave me the impression that everyone must have had a good time making it. I thought it would be pretty stupid but instead it was quite clever.
Rent the un-cut version, as the swearing by some of the characters is pretty important to their personalities. He's given some raucous lines to deliver, and does it straight. It certainly isn't the total pile of garbage that I was afraid it might be when I sat down to watch it. All the principal players deliver the proverbial goodies. After being thwarted in this attempt, they, and a would-be whore named Thursday, hatch a plan to kidnap Colby's wife, Nancy Sue, who is coincidently Sam's old flame, but find that Nancy Sue is not the sweet girl that Sam remembers. Sam regroups his old circle of grifters, and they hatch a scheme to get their hands on Colby's fortune; however, nothing seems to go smoothly for these ramshackle scam artists.
