But I think we can absolutely say this much: Tyler Perry absolutely, transparently does not want to make Madea movies any more. Plus ça change, and all: sloppy, thoughtless filmmaking is the foundation of Perry's filmography. Ella and Madea realize that and when it's revealed to be Kente Oil, Madea soon tells Vanessa that she is sleeping with Nate. His aim never produces a completely satisfying or consistently competent-looking movie his heart's in the right place, if not his camerawork. Joe predicts that Madea will get into trouble if she drives to the store herself, but Madea ignores him and goes anyway. Sonny forgets his keys and has to return home to pick them up but the frantic Vanessa tries to get him to leave quickly, due to Nate being upstairs in the bedroom.
Ella Kincaid, Madea's best friend and next door neighbor, enters the house asking for Madea Tyler Perry , who is absent. In other words, it delivers pretty much what you expected when you bought a ticket. Incidentally, it only started to register with me now that Madea and Brown presumably had sex, since they are both Cora's parents, which is a horrible thought to begin with; and it gets even more horrible in the scene when the malapropism-inclined Brown insists, with unusual vehemence and sincerity, that Madea has a prostate. In Family Funeral, the shifting happens right in the same scene; sometimes in the same shot. Once Madea is back at home, she notices a strange perfume on the clothes she washed, believing Vanessa was responsible. However, Madea isn't amused by the festivities and uses a to scare the party goers away.
Leo and Sonny arrive, and Leo leaves with Ella, while Sonny receives his food and leaves with Madea and Toni. Madea's cellmate and Donna Candace's fellow prostitute friend attend a class taught by Ellen at the prison, in order to have time reduced from their sentences. Nate takes the position and finds out that Sonny has his job now, at which point he leaves. Wanda arrives and Sonny talks with her about her relationship status. Josh later runs into his friend Ellen, a former drug addict and prostitute who has now become a minister that helps other women get off the streets.
The play and the film deal with Perry's signature character going to prison for her uncontrollable problems. There's even a scene where she pulls an assault rifle on a group of unarmed party goers. Played quite saucier than a , especially since she leaves her Bible at home, fraternizes easily with women on the streets, and tells Josh straight that he must be fully committed to help out a junkie. She takes a variety of drugs and becomes a walking zombie when she can stand up in this expertly photographed sexploitation feature. Returning home, Madea, needing to buy groceries, calls Cora to drive her to the store, but Cora declines, angering Madea. He tells Ellen that they were close friends from childhood through college, but during their college years, all of Josh's friends mistreated and bullied Candace because of her background and he started pushing her away out of embarrassment.
Mann are on hand to cluck and try to Jesus up Madea, but as before, this paragon of sense in this hyper-Christian franchise seems to have very little interest in having anything to do with Jesus besides, presumably, hitting Him in the face with a pan. Even though she blackmailed him into keeping quiet, he was eventually able to come clean about it and bring her down. After bail is made for Madea, and a brief encounter with Pete, she decides to take care of Toni until Katie gets out of jail. Christmas crisis averted with antics, bringing much-needed chaos to a character whose energy seemed to be flagging. And I was just starting to like you, with the surprisingly competent and the less-than-competent but intensely magnetic back-to-back in 2008; and then you had to go and bring her back. It also helped that Candy was unwilling to be helped by Josh earlier in the film.
Candace is moved by her words and during a visit with Josh, she admits that back when she was raped at the party he took her to, she called his name repeatedly as the attack happened, but he never came for her. Jeremy intervenes and decides to help Sonny by talking to the warden. Vanessa attempts to weasel her way back into Sonny's graces, due to her job interview she will lose the job if not out by Monday. Eventually, Madea goes to jail, and so does Candace, and a few other colorful sorts including Sofia Vergara as a serial killer, a comic performance so obnoxiously untethered that I cannot begin to fathom how to describe it, or relate it to anything else in the movie; maybe the intent was to make Madea seem grounded , and, in essence, an entirely different movie begins. With the help of her friend Donna Vanessa Ferlitto , and Helen Viola Davis , a serious of the Church, justice is eventually done. It has the gonzo theatrics and none of the inspiration; it is a tedious melodrama stuck on top of shrill comedy, and the two parts are both the worse off for the combination.
Perhaps it's just my fault for not having the right comic tastes, but I am frankly content to never understand the appeal of the slurring, slapdash performance Perry gives here, gaudy enough to make the Madea of yore seem like the height of wit. Her fiery attitude rivals Candace's easily from their first minute in introduction. He then reveals his love for Wanda, and she is initially unsure of her emotions, but leaves with Sonny. Still, the Madea sequences in Madea Goes to Jail are a most peculiar breed of comic relief that simply asserts itself without any story logic underpinning it. Madea then persuades Katie to tell Toni the truth about everything, and subsequently exits.
Wanda, Sonny, and the released Katie enter the house. While in prison, Madea befriends Candace and comes to her defense when she is sexually harassed by Big Sal. A cameoing Leroy Brown David Mann and Cora Brown Tamela J. The film was released on February 20, 2009. Meanwhile, in the B-plot to the movie, a prostitute named Candace Keshia Knight Pulliam fatefully encounters Josh Derek Luke , her best friend from college who now works as an assistant district attorney. Ella and Leo arrive, and then sing a number with Sonny and Wanda.
